Time for buttonholes. I use a Singer buttonholer attachment from the 1940s. It's about 20 years older than my machine. I think. I'm not sure. It's a bit of a pain to set up, requiring a plate that you screw down over the feed dogs and little cams that fit into the black body of the buttonholer, but it works really well and makes nice buttonholes. It's certainly served me well all these years that I haven't had the money to buy a modern $ewing machine that will do a one-$tep buttonhole (and then break when I subject it to the abuse my Singer can take.)
All these years I've had clear scotch tape in my sewing notions and this is the first I've thought to use it to tape down buttons when I attach them with my sewing machine. (Yes, I machine-stitch my buttons on, because lazy. In 32 years of sewing, I've only broken one needle doing it this way.)
Trial fit, with my hand holding the center waist, where I'll attach a hidden hook and eye. Still to come: tacking down the sleeve cuff turn-under, making a self-fabric belt, and doing the hems. I might even get to all of that later today. Then I can wear this on Sunday for church!
