Spotted this at a big box home improvement store when I was hunting for clearance orchids and African violets. Pretty sure this is not a natural coloration pattern in phalaenopsis petals. I think it is probably virus.
(Interestingly, a virus is also responsible for some similar - but more desirable - color patterns in tulips. )
Phals do have some streaky color patterns, but they're more uniformly streaky, like this:
Found mini-phals on clearance for $3, sunburned but healthy African violets for $1, and full size phals for $6. I resisted the urge to buy all the poor orphans and only brought home an unlabeled but double-crowned full size phal and the two sunburned violets.
I think one of the tiny mini phals I brought home previously is Phalaenopsis Tzu Chiang Balm.
