Pick one (or maybe two) traditional things to bake, things you only make at Christmas, and that's it. Nothing else. Period.
Or, do what my mom often did and let each kid pick one cookie to bake with mom. And that's it. Period.
I finally figured out part of my own Christmas puzzle, by the way. Since we moved here seven years ago, I've had trouble with Christmas feeling "like Christmas." I haven't been able, so far, to put a finger on why. But this year, I realized something.
It's the fruitcake. I made fruitcake this past Christmas, using my mom's recipe. I made regular fruitcake and I made gluten free fruitcake. My fridge was full of foil-wrapped loaves of fruitcake. Having fruitcake is very large part (if not the largest part!) of what makes Christmas "feel like Christmas" for me.
