Recent TV ad for I don't know what featured people raising arms overhead and the commentary was that the gesture was something along the lines of "this is the universal language of 'I did it!'" (pride in accomplishment). And it struck me that is why it always seems so WRONG to do that in church... especially in Lutheran worship. I didn't accomplish any thing (except to sin again) God be merciful to me, a sinner.
